Reading about this latest research from the Journal of Men and Masculinity reminded me of Janet’s line from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, “I don’t like men with too many muscles”.
It seems that maybe Janet, partnered with the nerdy and distinctly unmuscular Brad, may actually have a point. The research has found that men who are obsessed with having big muscles are more likely to be sexist. This is obviously hardly surprising, but it’s good to have proof. Let’s start with the body issue. That’s pretty simple – a man who spends hours at the gym every day to work on his own body can easily be excused for A. liking a toned body on the women he fancies and B. expecting his perfect partner to have a similar interest in keeping her own body fit. I can understand this attitude much more than I would understand a sworn couch potato going on about how a woman should be trim and skinny. But then we get into shadier subjects. Beefy men were also more likely to agree with statements such as “women often flirt with men to tease and hurt them” and “intoxication is worse in women than in men”. This, to me, implies some sort of serious self-confidence issue, which is perhaps the reason behind these men’s love of the gym.
The burly physique is maybe some sort of armour to protect an insecure and fragile heart. Think about that, next time you see a big muscular bloke and show a little tenderness.
