Telugu Cinema provides a no holds barred variety of action movies with some of the biggest superstars like Mahesh Babu, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, NTR to name a few. There is a growing market for Telugu movies as I know a couple of non- Telugu speaking people who are addicted to them. It might be because the magnanimity of their actors and the action packed plots. Well, Bigflix aims to make life easier for those guys who do not stay in Andhra Pradesh and cannot access these movies easily by adding the latest Telugu Blockbusters to its growing repertoire of movies.
Bigflix has been pushing the online movie segment for sometime now. They recently got in Tom Hank’s animated web series called Electric City. Bigflix’s app became the number one top grossing app in the iTunes India charts. Besides these things, Bigflix is planning to expand their services in this quarter to US, UK and Canada. This means the company is ramping up its services in a big way. Their addition of regional language movies may also entice folks living abroad who seek a connection to their homeland and culture.
We got in touch with Manish Agarwal, CEO of Bigflix and asked him a few questions of the company’s plans about regional movies and streaming.
Hi Manish. What prompted you to go with Telugu movies as compared to other regional movies in India?
Telugu movies have a huge demand from consumers both in India and abroad. While we already have a catalogue of multi-lingual movies, we wanted to strengthen our library with movies across languages and this is an important segment for BIGFLIX to consolidate its position as the largest video-on-demand service for Indian movies.
What are some of the numbers (users/paying users/internet enabled users) you see in relation to the streaming of Telugu movies online?
The market for online streaming services is still nascent in India. Right now our current focus is strengthening the BIGFLIX catalogue with multi-lingual movies from the Indian market as well as award winning movies from international markets. However, based on our initial research there is huge NRI populace in markets like the US, UK, Singapore, Middle East, etc. who don’t have access to high-quality library of Indian movies.
Are you going to support other regional language movies soon?
Yes, as mentioned earlier we do have movies in almost 10 Indian languages like Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, etc. We are working towards adding on to our current catalogue of Malayalam , Tamil and Bengali movies.
Tell us what you feel about smaller towns/cities and Internet connection? How do you see them adopting streaming?
Movie/Bollywood based content in any form is widely accepted by consumers in India, and there is definitely a latent demand for an online streaming service. In the case of smaller towns, the options for entertainment are limited and a service like BIGFLIX allows users to watch movies they like, in any language, irrespective of where they are living. Hence, a consumer from Chennai can watch new Tamil movies even in Jaipur (where such movies are not likely to be available via other mediums). The hindrance in the growth of online streaming services continues to be the internet speeds in India. However, as broadband & 3G penetration increases more users can access BIGFLIX on their PCs, mobiles and tablets.
Well. there you have it. Everyone is saying it. We need to get better Internet speeds soon!
You can check out the Telegu movies on Bigflix and tell us how you liked the whole streaming experience.
