The moment many a iPhone 5 owners have been waiting for – the release of Google’s official, standalone maps app. While Apple’s own mapping solution has a few perks here and there (like lockscreen navigation and nice in-app banners that alert you to new directions when you’re not inside the actual Apple Maps app), it lacks quite a bit compared to Google’s offering. Then again, the reasoning for this isn’t surprising. Google has been working on Google maps for 5+ years and has over 7,000 employees alone working on Google Maps tireless and constantly. Highlighting Apple Maps own shortcomings further, the Australian government even recently warned people from using Apple Maps at all as it was getting people legitimately stranded in the wilderness.
But alas, redemption is here. While we all wait for Apple to bring their own maps up to speed, it’s nice to know that we can finally jump back into something for more versatile, useful and familiar with Google Maps.
According to Google, the time and work they’ve poured into the new Google Maps for iPhone app has resulted in an app that is allegedly better than the Android version at this point.
After 30 minutes of hands on time with Google Maps for iPhone as well as comparing it alongside Apple’s own baked-in solution, we must say, Google did a great job in improving Google Maps for iPhone. On top of that, it highlights further how much work Apple still has in terms of matching Google Maps in breadth of information.
While Google Maps no longer benefits from tight, deep OS integration, the additional features over iOS as well as much better data is certainly reason enough to install Google Maps alongside Apple Maps for the time being.
