The world consumer electronics is an interesting place to be in. The rate at which new products are launched and developed makes it more versatile than pretty much any other industry. In India too, the market has been growing faster than ever. As smartphones and tablets hit lower and lower price points, sales figures are going in the exact opposite direction.
In a recently released report by E-Commerce Player Snapdeal, we get to know some interesting statistics about the market for the last few months. These Statistics are pertaining to the months July 2012 to September 2012:
Mobile Phones
As much as smartphones have made their presence felt in the worldwide market, with iPhones and the Galaxy S3 ruling the sales charts in other countries, the fact of the matter is that India is a very price sensitive market. As the figures have shown, 80% of all the mobile phones sold by Snapdeal during the period were under the Rs. 5000 or $100 mark. This means all the medium range and high range products by all the companies put together, works out to just 1/5th of over sales.
Because of this price anamoly, Micromax is the market leader in number of phones sold for the period. 17% of all smartphones. Their Ninja and Canvas ranges can be said to be the reason for this. Nokia is second with 15%, due to the Asha range and its great pricing. Samsung, Sony and HTC follow behind.
Tablets
Though Apple’s iPad revitalized the tablet market around the world, it doesn’t break any sales figures in India. Micromax rules the roost in tablets too. The Micromax Funbook has hit the sweet spot in balancing price and functionality and the sales figures prove that.
The tablet market in India is even more polarized than phones with respect to price, with 95% of tablet sales being under 10K. Zync too has experienced decent sales. In the 5% of sales that take place above 10K, the iPad is, unsurprisingly the leader. These statistics were only till September, so it should be interesting to see the figures for the months to follow. With the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini coming to India, this should shake things up.
However, the larger picture remains the same: consumers care more about a value proposition and falling under a budget than of premium looks or features.
