Avoiding Reality

(Before It's News)

I don't know what it is precisely, but every time I return from Faerieworlds, I find myself in 'reality avoidance' mode. Its not even just recovering physically or getting some me-time after being around people constantly– I just find myself wanting to relax and put my mind into other worlds for a while. I find myself watching a lot of sentimental movies, for instance– either that, or total fantasy, or even movies made for older kids like The Golden Compass. Just… I don't know– its like I can't deal with the harsh truth of things for a few days after I return from an idealized situation like a Faire or Festival.

I even avoid doing my contract work on those transcripts and instead lolly about in bed, daydreaming like a spoiled child. (Lucky I am to have such an opportunity this year, because most years I've had outside work and not had such a chance.) Its like it arouses this longing inside of me to live a different life or something. Of course, as a Type 4, I'm terrible about that sort of thing as it is! But I'm especially bad when I return from vacations, it seems. Apparently, I need an adjustment period to “come down” from the high.

Gee– I don't know why! As meanwhile, in the news we're hearing that HALF the counties in the entire United States have been declared disaster areas as of today. Extreme to exceptional drought in those counties, with yet more record high temps, often in the 100s, being recorded every day. The summer of hell just goes on and on and on throughout most of the nation. The maps with deep reds and dark browns and purples keep spreading out every week, as the damage from climate change expands.

We're blessed with yet another incredibly mild summer– Faerieworlds was entirely bearable for a wonder. The Pacific Northwest hasn't even had one day in the 90s yet. Up to 87 degrees F, but no higher than that. Supposedly we're to get our first 90 degree days coming up this next weekend. Last year, we didn't have our first hot days until the 20th of August, so its not as bad all around as last year. Certainly our garden is producing a harvest much sooner (by a good 2 weeks at least.) Our cucumbers, carrots, and peas are coming in now! Suddenly, I'm having salads every single day, often with free range eggs from our neighbors. One thing I've noticed about eating my own veggies all the time already is that my energy levels are UP, and my flares are DOWN. Even with drinking, dancing and sinning over an entire weekend, I'm feeling pretty gosh darned good. I intend to pay attention to this, because one has to wonder how much a diet free of chemicals can improve my less than vigorous health. We shall see…

One thing I noticed as we drove both south and north along the freeway that runs up through the fertile Willamette Valley– besides the normal grasses (for seeds and hay) and grains (wheat, etc.) there were a bunch of soybean crops and very new CORN crops! I'm talking corn only knee high all over the place. And I realized: corn prices are set to go through the roof this year with all the crop failures across the nation. So-! After harvesting the spring grasses, it looks like a bunch of farmers decided to go for a late corn crop this summer. We typically have very mild autumns and late frosts, so they probably will get a full harvest of corn, even planting it this late. Still-! It looks so odd to see such short corn crops, especially when you see the normal corn crops here and there beside them. You can tell what's going on. Here, with our unseasonably mild summer weather, farmers are taking advantage and cashing in (or, they will be anyway.)
