The man that authorities believe fatally shot a Kentucky state trooper Sunday evening has been subsequently linked to the anti-police Black Lives Matter movement.
Suspect Joseph Johnson-Shanks, who police suspect gunned down Trooper Joseph Ponder during a traffic stop, was shot and killed during a pursuit Monday. The Washington Post reported that Ponder attempted to make arrangements for the driver and his four passengers when he learned no one in the vehicle had a valid driver’s license.
“From time to time, our troopers do things like that,” Kentucky State Patrol spokesman Jay Thomas said.
The officer was reportedly attempting to find local accommodations for the group when Johnson-Shanks drove off and led Ponder on a highway pursuit.
Despite having two children in the vehicle with him, authorities report the driver slammed on his brakes and forced the officer to rear-end his car. At that point, reports indicate Johnson-Shanks opened fire on Ponder’s cruiser.
As media outlets dug into the suspect’s history, reports surfaced that he lives near Ferguson, Mo., and took part in the protests and riots that followed Michael Brown’s death last year.
One of his two prior arrests, National Review reported, was in August 2014. The date and location of his arrest, Ian Tuttle wrote, “coincides with the riots that broke out following the shooting death of Michael Brown; ‘interfering with a police officer’ was a common charge during the protests.”
Further evidence suggesting Johnson-Shanks’ involvement with Black Lives Matter came from a Facebook page he reportedly used. Among the images shared on the profile were scenes from the Brown’s funeral and the protests that destroyed much of Ferguson.
