DoT Tightens Reins For Getting A New Mobile Connection. Security Or Hassle?

(Before It's News)

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made it tougher to get a new mobile connection (Prepaid & Post-Paid), by introducing additional formalities. Additionally, the telecom governing body has ensured forgers are duly penalized via a thorough police inquiry.

After enjoying a sufficiently long & unbridled customer addition drive, telecom companies are now beginning to shed customers that no longer offer a steady stream of revenue. In fact over the past couple of months we have witnessed many such incidents, wherein mobile service providers have gladly & sometimes proactively let go of their customers in millions in order to achieve operational efficiency & improve overall standards. Though evidently a lot more is desired yet, the active customers can expect better quality of services as companies now focus their entire attention on these customers who add to the bottom line instead of taking a connection & be dormant. We hope this move doesn’t upset new subscribers.

What are the new rules? Under the refined set of rules, the onus of verifying & maintaining accurate set of details about the subscriber lies with the telecom companies. Additionally, authorized resellers of SIM cards will have to sign an undertaking confirming that they will physically see & verify that the applicant & his or her photograph on the application match. In case these documents are found to be incorrect or at worst forged, these resellers will have to register a police complaint.

Though these new Know Your Customer (KYC) norms appear quite strict, they should have been implemented a long time ago. Telecom companies then would have a much accurate database about their subscribers & cross-referencing them, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) would then have a much clearer picture about the real number to subscribers in the country.

This move is certainly going to put a lot of additional burned on a still expanding sphere. However, since Aadhar cards will soon be the de facto for identity verification, couldn’t government simply get its act straight about quicker enrollments in the Aadhar program?
