After several rumors, the name of next version of Android has been finally revealed by Google. We knew it was Android M, but what M stood for was the trickiest question for all of us. Well we know now, it is Android 6.0 Marshmallow! This Monday, Dave Burke, Android’s VP of Engineering revealed the name of this version via Twitter.
Google continued with its tradition, and revealed the name of next iteration of Android by placing a new Droid statue at the lawn of its headquarters in Mountain View. This time, the green Droid holds a new dessert which is Marshmallow! Along with this, the company also released a “near-final” SDK version of Android 6.0 for developers. The SDK page also highlights the name of next Android as Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
In a blog post, Jamal Eason, the product manager at Android wrote, “Whether you like them straight out of the bag, roasted to a golden brown exterior with a molten centre, or in fluff form, who doesn’t like marshmallows? We definitely like them. Since the launch of the M Developer Preview at Google I/O in May, we’ve enjoyed all of your participation and feedback. Today with the final Developer Preview update, we’re introducing the official Android 6.0 SDK and opening Google Play for publishing your apps that target the new API level 23 in Android Marshmallow.”
Unlike Android 5.0 Lollipop, the next version of Android, 6.0 Marshmallow has been specifically designed to bring stability alongside performance improvements. It will not bring a big bunch of features like Android L, but will pack cool upgrades with elements like, Android Pay, Tap on Now, USB-Type C, built-in fingerprint scanner, and an improved permission manager for efficient memory usage. It will also support ARMv8 64-bit capabilities.
According the reports, the next iteration of Android or you can say, Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be hitting shelves later this year alongside two Nexus phones. Huawei and LG will are speculated to launch new Nexus devices.
While Huawei-made Nexus is still under the wraps, we got a glimpse of the back panel of upgraded LG-made Nexus 5 smartphone from renowned Video producer Marques Brownlee aka MKBHD! Soon we’ll be hearing more about both of these devices.
