Off grid living How to raise livestock
Wouldn’t it be great to have all of these wonderful foods and not have to pay the crazy
grocery store prices? Having your own meat supply may be easier than you realize. Keep
reading because in this blog I’m going to show you how you can have your very own
livestock for a meat supply.
An ample supply of meat is something that every family should have so that you have the
protein that is needed to sustain life. In this blog I will share with you exactly how you too
can have your own fresh meat and not be dependent on your local grocery store.
No you don’t have to have a heard of cattle to satisfy your meat supply but you can raise
cattle too. Instead think small like chickens, rabbits, goats and other small animals.
Chickens have the advantage of supplying eggs and then becoming the meal and rabbits
are generally easy to care for a re-produce fast enough to keep your family fed. Once
again there are several sites that can help you get started such as
livestockconservancy.org. I like this website because you can see the types of breeds
available and what resources it takes to raise to raise each breed. It also has an
interactive map that allows you to search the world and find people who can supply the
breeds you desire. As you plan your food supply, you will want to consider the number of
people you need to feed and the period of time that you want to feed them. Space is
always a consideration and no you can’t raise chickens in your apartment but that does
not mean that some cities are now allowing you to raise chickens in your own backyard in
some neighborhoods. You will want to check your own local codes before you start any
type of livestock program. This site here thecitychicken.com talks about raising chickens
and even has a section that you can search to find out what the laws are for each city in
the US. Please keep in mind you will want to check with your local city before proceeding
to make sure this has been updated.
Most of these sites will also tell you how much room is needed to raise your animals so
you will want to take that in to consideration before you go wild buying livestock.
Raising your own livestock can be fun, rewarding and much healthier that purchasing
store bought meats. You can get fresh meat without all of the chemicals and hormones
because you can control what the animals eat.
I hope you enjoyed this blog and read our next blog in this series where I will talk about
what type of heat sources you will need in your off grid home, how to get them and we
will also compare the different types of fuels that are available. I’ll see you in the next
blog!
