Jade Helm Invited To New Mexico?

At Thursday’s County Commission meeting Commissioner Janet White discussed the topic of Jade Helm 15, a challenging eight-week joint military and interagency Unconventional Warfare exercise being conducted throughout Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.

The exercises will mainly be conducted in Texas because the military and interagency require large areas of undeveloped land with low population densities with access to towns.

Jade Helm is also a U.S. Special Operations Command sponsored exercise to improve the Special Operations Forces’ UW capability as part of the National Security Strategy. It is said to run from July 15 through Sept. 15.

White said there has been a lot of discussion coming from the rural communities in southern New Mexico because residents are concerned that military training will be happening near their area.

“Because of the concerns I’m hearing, I contacted Sheriff Benny House to ask what he knew about it since he’s listed along with us as being in coordination with this operation,” White said. “Benny told me that he was contacted by a representative from the Army about 45 days ago. He said he didn’t remember hearing the term Jade Helm being used, what he was told was that the Army was doing an evasion drill operation in the Hudspeth County area.”

White said the drill would bring the Army into New Mexico, in Otero County, about two to three miles.

“The Army said they have contacted all the private property owners of the operation. The operation was to run sometime from August and October 2015, the dates are little different from the ones presented from National Security,” White said. “The concerns, there’s a bunch of conspiracies out there, if you Google them you’ll find several days worth to look at. Some of the concerns I’m hearing from the citizens is that we need to hear from these people and find out what they have in mind and what to expect just as a basic education tool so that citizens know what’s going on.”

White said she feels it’s necessary for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command to contact local officials such as the Mayor and County Commissioners to have an open discussion and answer questions.

“They have admitted to the Sheriff and to the Sheriff’s Office in Hudspeth County that they will be in Otero County. I would like to meet with these people and ask them some questions,” White said. “The number one question I’m getting from residents is why haven’t we had a meeting yet? They’re calling me and asking me about it and I can’t answer their questions because I haven’t had an opportunity to meet with the people that are doing this and I know they’ve taken the time and energy to do this right across our border in Hudspeth County, right next to Otero, and I would like to know if they’re doing anything here.”

In an email written by Sheriff Benny House, he states that he does not know that much about Jade Helm but he is planning on meeting with the Jade Helm representative once more to ask more questions.

“I really don’t know that much about Jade Helm. I plan on reaching the representative who came to my office and ask some more questions. I really don’t know what Otero County has to do with Jade Helm but I know with McGregor Range and White Sands we probably have a larger role than is being disclosed,” stated House in the email. “I don’t know the Army’s responsibility to disclose on what takes place on the military range but I do know what was disclosed earlier was an operation that was possibly going to cross private property.”

Commissioner Susan Flores said County Commissioners in Curry County were briefed on Jade Helm earlier this month, she said military personnel were to conduct exercises near Cannon Air Force Base and that Oro Grande was also listed as a location for possible training.

“At this point I don’t know if operations are going to be held on El Paso’s range, maybe that’s the reason they haven’t contacted us yet,” Flores said.

Jade Helm Operations Planner, Francisco Oquendo Jr. said the U.S. Army Special Operations Command has been conducting this Realistic Military Training (RMT) for years and that it’s nothing out of the ordinary.

“The Army has been conducting these kinds of exercises since 1958, this is nothing out of the ordinary,” said Oquendo. “All the conspiracy theories on the internet are 100 percent false, there is nothing to fear, this is our military.”

Realistic Military Training (RMT) is training conducted outside of federally owned property. The RMT process is designed to ensure proper coordination between the Department of Defense representatives and local and regional authorities.

The approximate 1,200 personnel will be primarily U.S. Army Special Operations Command, with SOC units from the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps included.

White said if Jade Helm representatives are seeking an invitation she will invite them.

“We’re suppose to invite them so let’s get this party started,” White said. “People I know support the military and this is not anti-military, we support them.”
