Major Update: Heavily Armed Bundy Reinforcements Asked to Leave By Bundy

What will surely come as strange news, the heavily armed reinforcements who arrived at the federal refuge in Oregon yesterday to support the Bundy Militia have now been asked to leave… allegedly by Ammon Bundy. Is that true, or is the media merely trying to spin things to look like there is division between militia members, giving law enforcement an excuse to act?

Reports ABC News on Jan. 9: “They rolled up in a long convoy of pickup trucks and utility vehicles – members of Idaho’s ‘3 Percent Group’ and the ‘Pacific Patriot Network.’ Heavily armed, assault rifles at the ready, they waded into the dwindling number of media and others at the entrance of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge headquarters today and took over a press conference arranged by the group occupying the reserve, led by Ammon Bundy.”

Todd MacFarlane, a Utah lawyer close to the Bundys and who has been acting as a mediator, said the occupation leader was “alarmed” at the arrival of the armed convoy, and that he asked them to leave.

“The Bundys have tried to put the word out – we don’t need you, it is the last thing we need or want to here,” McFarlane said.

Over a dozen pickup trucks arrived with men from the Pacific Patriot Network, a consortium of community groups from Oregon, Washington and Idaho who call themselves “first responders.” The group has the self-described goal of providing a “comprehensive and integrated response that coordinates community resources to protect life, liberty, property and the environment of our communities through mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery from all natural and man-made hazards that may impact our communities.”

Other supporters came from the 3 Percent Group, a similarly styled assembly of patriots. A statement on the group’s website says they delivered cold weather gear and 600 pounds of groceries to those engaged in “civil disobedience” at the refuge. “We are here to create a safety buffer,” and to “de-escalate” the situation, 3 percent leader Brandon Curtiss said, shortly before he was told his group was no longer needed.

The small, armed protest group has been dwindling since they took over the remote national wildlife refuge in Oregon in early January. The group is drawing attention to federal land use policies, punctuated by a rally protesting a federal judge’s ruling that a father and son be remanded back to jail for a charge of arson on federal lands.

According to Oregon’s Capital Gazette on Jan. 4, the armed takeover of the refuge commenced after a peaceful rally was held for local ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond. Reports the Gazette: “The Hammonds were convicted of arson three years ago for fires that burned on federal land in 2001 and 2006. Though they served their original sentences for the conviction — Dwight serving three months, Steven serving one year — an appellate judge ruled in October that the terms were too short under federal minimum sentencing laws.”

Dwight Hammond, 73, and his son, Steven, 46, each served time in prison for the unlawful burning of federal land in Oregon. Dwight served three months and his son served a year. However, a judge ruled that the pair had not served the mandated time as set out by federal anti-terrorism laws – which call for mandatory 5-year sentence.

The ranchers, who have publicly attempted to distance themselves from the protest at the wildlife refuge, reported to San Pedro prison on Jan. 4.

ABC News spoke of the difficulty the occupiers have had at solidarity, calling the arrival – and subsequent departure – of the supporters “the latest in a series of conflicts or missteps between groups pressing different causes that have been drawn to the refuge. Earlier this week there was a fistfight between rival groups seeking attention or a way to press their own case for change.”

At the site, there is little evidence that the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, located approximately 30 miles south of Burns, is being held by militia members that have garnered national attention. No federal law enforcement agencies, FBI, National Guard, armored vehicles or troops are visible at the holdout.

“There is a time to go home, we know that,” Ammon Bundy said. “It’s just not now.”
